At the age of 14, S. M. Calkins left Wisconsin and the snow and moved west to Oregon.  He learned shorthand and bicycled the "circuit" from Eugene to Medford and the south coast with Judge Skipworth as a court reporter.  At the age of 49, S. M. Calkins was admitted to the Oregon State Bar and opened his law practice in Eugene.  He had a general practice, including representing the city of Eugene as city attorney.  He was joined in the practice by his brother W.W. Calkins until 1932.  W.W. Calkins had retired from banking and had given up his political career as a city councilor who helped establish the Eugene Water & Electric Board, and as a state legislator.

In 1932 S.M.'s son, Windsor joined the practice.  Windsor continued the general practice, including the defense of criminal cases and general litigation with his father S.M. until S.M. retired at the age of 85 in 1957.  In 1936 the firm represented the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace in establishing Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene.  In 1949 Windsor Calkins became general counsel for the Eugene Water & Electric Board.  In 1957, Windsor was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers.

In 1971 Windsor's son, Win, joined the practice.  And in 1988 Win was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers.

In 1991, Win's wife, Judy, joined the practice.
